A formidable Actor trained in various disciplines
A passionate Film Maker raising social awareness through his work
Val was born in Broken Hill, NSW, Australia to Antonietta (Canu) a dressmaker, and Arthur Athanassiou, a surveyor. His family moved to Cootamundra and then to Sydney, where Val worked as an Accounts Clerk, Bartender, Security Guard, Barista and Waiter. He originally sought a sales career in the burgeoning Home Video industry. In 1986, his love of theatre led him to the Graham Corry School of Drama where he made his professional acting debut in the modern day interpretation of Aristophenes' "The Birds"
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he appeared in a handful of plays, and continued a parallel sales career for entertainment companies such as Warner Bros, Roadshow and 20th Century Fox where he met his current spouse Melissa Eastwood. He ventured into Stand-Up Comedy, Modeling, Voiceovers, Singing and Dancing, briefly fronting as lead singer for the experimental band "Mustard Volvos" and as back up singer for the Italian language group Fratelli D'Italia, culminating in a performance at the Sydney Opera House for the Italian Festival of Song
His career was temporarily sidelined with the birth of Serafina-Susan in 2004 and Marco-Greggory in 2007, both of whom he remains the primary carer. Val buried himself in training and in 2008, he returned to the stage, playing multiple roles in the Jennifer Hagan directed NIDA Production of the Peter Handke play "The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other". Participating in several Short and Sweet Plays, he was twice nominated for Best Actor in 2009, and in 2010 the play "Something About Bindis" (in which Val was hailed for his performance as the terminally ill "Jake") was awarded Best Overall Play
In 2010 he realized his dream of appearing in a musical with "Leader of The Pack" singing the Beach Boys Classic "I Can Hear Music".
The past decade has seen Television appearances in Home and Away, All Saints, Behind Mansion Walls, Deadly Women, numerous commercials as well as the acclaimed horror film Lead Me Astray.
